Which Crimes Require Sex Offender Registration in Ohio?

One consequence of certain sex crime convictions in Ohio is mandatory registration in the state's sex offender registry. Ohio’s sex offender registry includes information such as offenders' names, addresses, and crimes. For the purpose of registration, Ohio classifies sex offenders under the following tiers:

  • Tier one offenders must register annually for 15 years. 
  • Tier two offenders must register every six months for 25 years. 
  • Tier three offenders must register every 90 days for life. 
Below is an overview of the crimes that require registration in Ohio's sex offender registry. 

Tier one offenses 

The following are tier 1 sex offenses in Ohio that require annual registration for 15 years:
  • Unlawful sexual conduct with a minor
  • Voyeurism
  • Flashing
  • Importuning
  • Child enticement with sexual motivation
  • Gross sexual imposition
  • Pandering obscenity
  • Unlawful restraint with sexual motivation

Tier two offenses 

The following are tier 2 sex offense in Ohio that require registration every six months for 25 years:

  • Pandering obscenity involving a minor
  • Kidnapping with sexual motivation
  • Abduction with sexual motivation
  • Pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor
  • Compelling prostitution
  • Sex offenses that occur following a tier 1 classification

Tier three offenses 

  • The following are tier 3 sex offenses in Ohio that require registration every 90 days for life: 
  • Aggravated murder with a sexual motivation
  • Kidnapping a minor in order to engage in sexual activity
  • Kidnapping of a minor
  • Sexual battery
  • Rape
  • Murder with a sexual motivation
  • Sex offenses that occur following a tier 2 or tier 3 classification
